Night Feeds at Forty Below

About this book

Hollis Brandt is nineteen, broke, a university dropout from a trailer on Chena Hot Springs Road, and the least qualified person ever hired by Borealis Genesis — the lab outside Fairbanks that has just brought woolly, cold-built elephant calves into the world. Her job is the one nobody with a degree wanted: night feeds every three hours at forty below. Then a starving calf called Moss starts to drink for her, and a keeper flown in from Kenya, who has never seen snow, teaches her the rule his orphanage lives by: no calf may love only one keeper. Four years later the lab is sold, Moss's herd is bound for a heated attraction in Nevada, and Hollis has six weeks to prove they can survive a winter wild. The man sent to judge her is the keeper who left without a word.
