Free story premise generator
Type a few keywords, or leave the field empty, and get five original story premises: who the story is about, what they want and what stands in the way. It is free and needs no account. When one grabs you, Novelist can write the whole novel.
Start from a spark
How it works
Give it a spark, or none
A place, an object, a feeling or a what-if. Leave the field empty and pick a genre if you want a complete surprise.
Get five premises
An AI editor pitches five different stories, each with a protagonist, what they want, what stands in the way and why a reader would care.
Keep one, or write the book
Copy the premise you like, or open it in the Novelist studio, where it can become a complete novel delivered as an EPUB or PDF.
What makes a premise worth writing
Someone wants something
A premise starts with a person and a desire. Without a goal there is a situation, not a story.
Something stands in the way
The obstacle is the engine. The harder it pushes back, the more the story has to say.
Something is at stake
Readers keep turning pages when they know what will be lost if the hero fails.
One detail feels new
A familiar shape with one fresh twist beats an idea that tries to be original everywhere at once.
Questions
Is the story premise generator really free?
Yes. There is no account, no payment and no email. To keep it free for everyone there is a daily limit per visitor.
Do I have to type anything?
No. Keywords help steer the ideas, but you can leave the field empty, choose a genre and let the generator surprise you.
Can I use these premises for my own story?
Yes, the ideas are yours to use and develop however you like.
Do you store what I type?
No. Your keywords are sent to our AI model only to write the premises and are not saved with the results. We keep an anonymous daily count per visitor to enforce the free limit.
Can Novelist write the whole novel?
Yes. Novelist plans and writes a complete, original novel from your premise, with a cover and illustrations, and emails it to you as an EPUB or PDF. That part is paid; the price is shown before you confirm.
