On the far side of the Moon, in Daedalus crater, the smallest school in the Solar System is counting down to the end of term. When the next sunrise comes, the old radio dish called Old Bell will be taken apart, and every pupil must present a project to visiting scientists first. Eleven-year-old Fen Abara would rather vanish. She spends her evenings hiding in Old Bell's cold control hut, listening to the hiss of empty space through ancient headphones, until one night she hears something patient and deliberate under the hiss, a pattern that comes back every nineteen hours.
