Eleven Doors on Cutler's Row

About this book

In present-day Bristol, houses have minds, and Nell Pryce, fifty-nine, is the city's most respected house-speaker. She has never owned a home: her mentor taught her that a speaker who belongs to one house hears only that house, and in 1991 Nell chose that rule over the man she was about to marry. Now the council needs Cutler's Row, eleven condemned Victorian houses in Bedminster, cleared for new homes by January, and the houses are refusing to come down. Nell has a raw, brilliant apprentice who hears too much, a deadline that will not move, and a salvage contractor she knows too well: Owen Treharne, the man she left a week before their wedding. Somewhere on the Row is a reason the street will not let go. Finding it will ask Nell the one question she has spent thirty-four years avoiding: can she stay?
