The Year the Train Didn't Come

About this book

Churchill, Manitoba, 2017. The railway has washed out, the only way out of town is by plane, and seventeen-year-old Kit Sauvé is saving every dollar she can hustle from tourists to get out. When an old American, Tommy Archuleta, arrives with his serious grandson Gabriel and a list of places he last saw in 1958, Kit hires herself out as their driver. Then Tommy shows her a photograph of the girl he came back for: Kit's own grandmother, Agnes. Kit tells him Agnes is dead. In 1958, seventeen-year-old Agnes Byczko is told to make friends with a young soldier who holds the key to a warehouse. She does not plan to love him. Fifty-nine years apart, two girls tell a lie to protect their families. How long can Kit keep hers going, with Gabriel getting closer every day?
