The Governor of Halvering

About this book

Halvering is a fog-bound foundry city built over a fault that breathes heat, and four hundred thousand people live on what its Hearth sends through the brass mains. Ione Pettigrew, thirty-one, a main-fitter with a brother's lung debt and a gift she has hidden since childhood, closes a burst main under a school yard with her bare hands. The Company's sounders hear it across the city. The lot has fallen on her: she must be the next Governor, sealed beside the fire that keeps the city warm. Her escort is a Warden sworn to one rule, no attachment. Eleven weeks of lessons, one winter, and a Hearth that has been lonely longer than anyone remembers.
