The Thaw at Corran Notch

About this book

High in the Corran Notch, the wardens keep a stone hospice, a kennel of rescue dogs and the rime: frost that holds spoken words, to be thawed and heard once. Hessa Vane, fifty-two, dry and exacting, teaches three teenage novices to read snow and question witnesses. Then the hottest summer anyone remembers melts the Tallow Glacier back and uncovers the body of Tobin Arle, the friend who vanished thirty-six years ago and was branded a thief. Hessa has kept a secret about that night since she was sixteen. Now Tobin's skull is broken, the ice around him holds words, and her youngest student is accused of robbing the dead. To clear him she must teach an honest investigation that may convict the man who taught her everything.
