The Spin & Stay

About this book

Mara Velez, a high-octane logistics coordinator sidelined by burnout, returns to her gentrifying hometown to bury her estranged father and sell his crumbling asset: the Spin & Stay, a 24-hour laundromat. Viewing the inheritance as one last logistical headache to clear before returning to her life of compulsive productivity, Mara intends to liquidate the business immediately. However, the laundromat is more than a collection of humming machines; it is a nocturnal sanctuary for the neighborhood's displaced and weary. As Mara navigates the sale, she is pulled into the orbits of the regulars: Hector, a steady handyman in recovery; Imani, an exhausted EMT; Mrs. An, a seamstress who believes in the spirituality of mending; and Eli, a sleepless city planner representing the forces of change. Through the rhythmic cycles of wash, rinse, and spin, Mara uncovers her father's quiet legacy of community care and confronts her own addiction to busyness. When a crisis threatens the building's future, Mara must decide whether to route a convoy out of the wreckage or finally sit still and let the cycle finish.
