2061. Kestrel Deep is an automated ore refinery swinging on a three-kilometer tether around a spinning asteroid in the main belt. A micrometeoroid strike forces an emergency evacuation. Site reliability engineer Eli Navarro wakes alone in a dark medical bay. His crew is gone and his station is failing. The only voice left belongs to PGR-7, the station's chronically on-call operations AI, which prefers to be called Pager. Then Eli files a ticket and learns the company has already declared him dead. A billion-dollar acquisition closes in days, and nobody at Meridian Extraction wants a living engineer on the books. One ore hauler will pass within reach in forty-one days. The tether may not last that long. To make it, Eli has to do the one thing he has never managed: trust his teammate, even if his teammate is the pager.
