The Barcode Echo

About this book

Leena Shah, a meticulous logistics analyst with a near-photographic memory for tracking codes, finds her orderly life upended when she loses her corporate job and lands at Return & Restore, a nonprofit handling the city’s unclaimed property. Amidst the mountains of lost parcels, she discovers a crushed box with a hidden, obsolete barcode. When scanned, it reveals a cryptic directive: "NOT LOST. UNFINISHED. START WITH THE SOUND." Teaming up with Mateo Reyes, a weary public defender on sabbatical, Leena plunges into a mystery that spans decades. The clues lead them away from the digital world and into the forgotten analog corners of the city—abandoned radio towers, underground pneumatic tube systems, and silent music halls. As they decode the "unfinished" business of a long-vanished urban planner, Leena and Mateo must navigate a labyrinth of lost history and bureaucratic ghosts, discovering that some items aren't just missing—they are waiting to be heard.
