The Moth-Spinner's Apprentice

About this book

In the cliffside town of Lumenport, the sky isn't just weather—it is a masterpiece spun nightly by gigantic Moon-Moths and maintained by the elite Loomkeepers. Twelve-year-old Mina Kestrel, a girl with a leg brace and a unique synesthesia that allows her to taste patterns and smell colors, lives on the fringes of this prestigious society, helping her grandmother Nani in a humble dye shop. Mina's world changes when a catastrophic rip appears in the dawn sky, causing time to skip violently. Acting on instinct, she repairs the tear using a forbidden needle—a relic outlawed after an ancient disaster. This act catches the attention of the Moon-Moths, who flash a message only she can decipher, and draws the ire of the High Loomkeeper. Forced to flee with a disgraced young apprentice named Zandik who seeks redemption, Mina must journey to the High Roost to unravel the mystery of the unraveling sky. Along the way, she discovers that the perfect tapestry of Lumenport hides a frayed history, and that her 'imperfect' senses may be the only thing capable of weaving a future where the sky doesn't fall.
