The narrative unfolds in strict reverse chronology, beginning in the desolate aftermath of their group's destruction in 1985 and stepping backward year by year. As the story rewinds, the hollowed-out survivors are seen at the moment of their catastrophic arrest, then during the paranoid fractures of their relationships, back to the glorious zenith of their artistic triumph, and finally resting at the innocent, hopeful day they first met in 1981. Through rotating first-person perspectives, the novel untangles a complex web of loyalty, censorship, and the tragic price of artistic defiance.
