When he discovers a legendary 'Mother Seed' rumored to have the power to purify toxic soil, he embarks on a journey to the legendary Sunken Canyon to plant it. The narrative weaves between the present journey and the past events that shaped Toby and three other children: Marigold, a fierce water-dowser seeking to save her failing town; Kaelen, a boy raised in a harsh, resource-hoarding rival camp who is sent to steal the seed; and Olen, the elderly archivist trying to preserve the mistakes of the old world. As their paths converge in the harsh wasteland, the children must unlearn the survivalist mentalities they inherited. Through shared hardships, learning to ask for help, and acts of profound self-care, they discover that true renewal of the earth requires making peace with each other first.
