Clean Breaks

About this book

Marisol 'Mari' Alvarez, a thirty-four-year-old former ER nurse recovering from addiction, swore she would never return to the South Side of Milwaukee. But when her estranged mother dies suddenly, Mari is forced back to the very streets she fled. Instead of an inheritance, she is left with a crumbling duplex, a mountain of debt, and 'Second Chance Scene Services,' a biohazard cleanup business her mother ran in secret. The will is explicit: Mari only inherits the assets if she personally operates the business for ninety days. Forced to don a hazmat suit and scrub the aftermath of tragedies, Mari must work alongside a crew of misfits she once abandoned, including her former flame and the neighbors who know her darkest secrets. As she cleans up the literal messes of others, she uncovers the hidden history of her mother's life and is forced to confront the wreckage of her own past, learning that some stains require more than bleach to remove.
