Publish your edition

A finalized edition is ready for stores. Here is how to publish it on Amazon KDP, step by step, and what to check on other stores.

Amazon KDP, step by step

A plain guide to publishing a finalized edition of your writer mode novel on Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). Each step links to Amazon's own help page, which always has the latest details.

  1. Before you start

Finalize an edition in the Writer Studio and download its files: the EPUB, the Kindle ebook cover and, for a paperback, the KDP interior and cover. The Publish tab tells you what KDP publishes in your book's language.

  2. Create your KDP account

Sign in at kdp.amazon.com with your Amazon account, or create one.

  3. Add your tax and payment details

KDP asks for your tax information and the bank account where it pays your royalties. Complete both before you publish.

  4. Create a Kindle ebook

On your KDP Bookshelf, choose to create a new Kindle ebook.

  5. Enter the book details

Use the title, subtitle and author name exactly as they appear on your edition's title page. Do not list Novelist as author, contributor or publisher: the co-creation credit lives inside the book. For a series, add the series name.

The launch kit in the Writer Studio can suggest a description, keywords and categories: check them against KDP's rules before you use them.

  6. Answer the AI content question

KDP asks whether your book contains AI-generated content: answer yes. For the text, choose the option that matches how much you edited it; the authorship figures in the Publish tab can help you decide. The cover and any illustrations made by Novelist are AI-generated.

  7. Upload your files and preview the book

Upload the edition's EPUB as the manuscript and the Kindle ebook cover as the cover. Check every page in the previewer, and keep the co-creation credit pages.

  8. Choose rights, prices and royalties

Choose where the book is sold, the royalty plan and the price. Novelist never sells your book, so you can enroll it in KDP Select if you wish.

  9. Publish

Publish the book. Amazon reviews it before it goes on sale; KDP's help explains how long that takes.

  10. Add a paperback (optional)

From the same title, create a paperback: choose the 6 × 9 in (15.24 × 22.86 cm) trim size, no bleed and white paper, then upload the KDP interior and cover from your edition. You can order a proof copy to see it in print first.

  11. After publishing

Keep the co-creation credits in every version you upload. When you finalize a new edition, upload its files to replace the old ones.

Amazon updates its pages, prices and rules from time to time. When this guide and Amazon's page disagree, follow Amazon's page.
