Winter, 1909. Forty-one miles up a narrow-gauge spur in the Oregon Cascades, the Ashcroft-Nagel timber camp at Knot Creek has one cookhouse, one telegraph key, one store, and one boardinghouse. Twenty-five-year-old Senna Voss owns the boardinghouse. She also owns nearly everyone in camp. Behind the wardrobe in Room 6 there is a crack wide enough for a camera lens, and in a tin box under the floor there is a ledger of names, dates, and prices. Senna does not sell whiskey or women. She sells silence, and she has never once lost sleep over the trade. The novel opens at its own ending: a hemlock limb, a rope, and Mattis Brandt—gangly, twenty, Swedish, the boy who chopped Senna's wood and mended her roof and was the only family she ever let herself keep—hanged by the camp's makeshift tribunal for poisoning Foreman Harlan Grier in her front room. Senna stands in the frozen crowd and watches, and she knows he did not do it. Then the story runs backward. Through the tribunal, the bribes, the searches and the inquest, through a January in which a foreman found a ledger he was never meant to find, back through the building of Room 6 and a girl of sixteen fleeing a company brothel with a stolen plate camera, the book excavates its own crime one layer at a time: a laundress from Creek country saving for a letter that will free her nephew; a pregnant cook with nowhere on earth to go; a sixteen-year-old telegraph operator learning that knowledge is a currency; a company timekeeper who needs a killer before the county man's train arrives. Each step backward changes what the step before it meant. Grief becomes calculation. Justice becomes a lynching. Friendship becomes the deepest wound in the book. The last chapter is the first hour of the murder night, and it is the only hour Senna has never let herself look at squarely.
